EASTCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say two people are in critical condition after their car flipped over and landed in the Bronx River in Westchester County.

Police tell the Journal News (https://lohud.us/1pV7kMh ) that the car was heading north on the Bronx River Parkway on Saturday when the driver lost control and overturned into the water.

Yonkers Assistant Fire Chief Larry Dunn said good Samaritans dived in to pull the male driver and female passenger out of the car.

Dunn said the rescuers had trouble getting the passenger out of the car. Emergency crews were able to pull her out.

Authorities said both victims were taken to hospitals in critical condition.

The river is about 5 feet deep in the area where the car landed.

Police are investigating the accident.
