BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Authorities have arrested a man accused of vandalizing churches in the Birmingham area.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office says 31-year-old Eja Cree of Center Point was taken into custody around 5 p.m. Friday. He’s charged with first-degree criminal mischief.

He was being held in the Jefferson County jail on $15,000 bond. It wasn’t immediately clear whether he had a lawyer.

Deputies arrested Cree in connection with graffiti spray painted on the walls, doors and grounds of four churches in northeast Jefferson County. Authorities say similar vandalism was reported in Birmingham, Hueytown and Pleasant Grove.

Cree told investigators the Holy Spirit told him to “get the word out.” He said the seemingly nonsensical word painted on the churches means “Jesus is coming.”

The investigation was continuing and more charges were expected.
