CARMEL, N.Y. (AP) - A teenage girl who was days away from graduating from the eighth grade has apparently drowned in a lake in Putnam County.

The Journal News reports (https://lohud.us/1oTIj4x ) that Jenna Nolan was pulled unconscious from Lake Mahopac on Friday.

Carmel police say the girl was pulled from the water around 1:30 p.m.

Police Chief Michael Cazzari says officers “made a valiant effort” to save her.

But the teen was pronounced dead at Putnam Hospital Center in Carmel.

The medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

Police are investigating how the girl ended up in the water.

School officials have scheduled sessions for students to talk to grief counselors.
