CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - A Charlotte lawyer has been elected chairman of the board that oversees the University of North Carolina system.

The Board of Governors selected John Fennebresque on Friday. He is a 1970 UNC Chapel Hill undergraduate with a law degree from Vanderbilt University and has been on the board since 2011.

The board governs all 17 of North Carolina’s public universities, determining their academic programs and other functions.

Fennebresque is a vice chairman of international law firm McGuireWoods. Firm chairman Richard Cullen says Fennebresque was an excellent choice because no one loves the UNC system more than he does.

Fennebresque’s begins his term on July 1, taking over for Peter Hans.
