GAFFNEY, S.C. (AP) - Authorities continue to investigate the death of a Gaffney woman whose husband said he accidentally shot her as he cleaned his shotgun.

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler said 59-year-old Rita Pennington died at the scene of the shooting around 8 a.m. Saturday.

Fowler says Pennington’s husband told investigators his 12-gauge shotgun accidentally fired.

The coroner says an autopsy has been scheduled.

Cherokee County Sheriff Steve Mueller says he will take the autopsy results and other evidence to prosecutors to decide if any charges should be filed.
