UWHARRIE, N.C. (AP) - Authorities say an 18-year-old man drowned in a central North Carolina lake after he saw a snake while holding on to a floating log and panicked.

Investigators said several teenagers were jumping off a cliff Saturday afternoon in a private portion of Tuckertown Lake in Montgomery County when Richard Maxwell III went under.

His friends told authorities they were holding on to a log in the lake when Maxwell saw a snake, panicked and let go of the log. His friends say he didn’t come back up, and they swam to shore and called 911.

Divers found Maxwell’s body about two hours later.
