NAPLES, Fla. (AP) - The Florida Highway Patrol says two people are dead after being hit by a sports utility vehicle as they walked across the eastbound lanes of Alligator Alley.

The crash happened Sunday night near mile marker 63.

Troopers say the pedestrians had been walking along the grass median and attempted to cross the road to get to their vehicle, which was near a rest area along Interstate 75. The driver was unable to avoid the collision. The pedestrians hit the vehicle’s windshield and then tumbled onto the pavement. Both died at the scene.

According to the highway patrol, the victims were women from South Florida. Their names have not been released.

An investigation continues, but no charges were expected against the driver.
