CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Charleston’s police chief says there is no evidence his officer fired a weapon at the apartment complex where a 19-year-old man died.

The Charleston County Coroner’s Office said Denzel Curnell was shot in the head Friday night. Police Chief Greg Mullen says Curnell did have a gun.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the death and only says it happened during a struggle.

Mullen said Monday he was frustrated with rumors and misinformation in the case, but police have released few details since the incident Friday night, citing SLED’s investigation.

The lack of information frustrated neighbors of the teen. Homemade signs in the apartment complex called for justice, with some people suggesting Curnell had no weapon and was on his knees when he was killed.
