PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) - A U.S. Coast Guard pollution investigation team is working to cleanup a 1,000-pound tar mat from the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico near Pensacola Beach.

The Pensacola News Journal (https://on.pnj.com/1mdS6yV ) reported Monday that investigators discovered the large mat of weathered oil, sand and shells on Friday.

It has been four years since oil from the massive BP Deepwater Horizon explosion and spill reached Florida’s beaches. Environmental crews routinely monitor the region and check for lingering residue from the spill.
