MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - A campaign to erect a statue in Morgantown honoring the late Don Knotts has topped its fundraising goal.

Beth Fuller tells The Dominion Post (https://bit.ly/1j6vrzT ) that the Greater Morgantown Convention & Visitors Bureau recently donated $5,000 to the project. The gift boosted the statue fund to more than $53,000.

The goal was $50,000. Fuller says any additional funds will be used to maintain the statue and surrounding grounds.

Knotts grew up in Morgantown and graduated from Morgantown High School and West Virginia University. The actor died in 2006.

Fuller says the next step is to determine where the statue will be located.

Fuller is the former president of Your Community Foundation, which is accepting donations for the project.
