ST. JAMES CITY, Fla. (AP) - Authorities say an elderly man was killed when his van caught fire in southwest Florida.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office reports that the man had been driving on a wheel’s metal rim for several miles Sunday after one of his tires shredded and fell off. Flames from the van’s remaining tires sparked small fires in lawns of Pine Island homes as he drove.

The vehicle eventually burst into flames. A friend tried to rescue the man but couldn’t reach him.

No other occupants were reported.

The News-Press (https://goo.gl/x7VKhm ) reports that the man’s body was taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office for positive identification and official cause of death.
