GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - A 58-year-old western Michigan man will spend a year in the Kent County Jail for a crash that killed two Traverse City men.

Patrick Doerr was sentenced Monday in Grand Rapids 63rd District Court. He pleaded no contest last month to misdemeanor moving violations causing death.

Authorities said Doerr’s pickup was traveling about 84 mph when it slammed last September into the rear of car in Plainfield Township, killing 29-year-old William Kochis and 49-year-old John Pomeroy. Kochis and Pomeroy were stopped in morning rush hour traffic.

Doerr refused to take a blood test at a hospital. A urine screening found cocaine and opiates, but that test was not allowed in court.

Judge Sara Smolenski said Monday that more testing should have been done at the time of the crash.
