PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Police say a man who tried to rob a Philadelphia vitamins store has been shot and killed by the store’s owner.

The shooting occurred Monday evening at Stan’s Health Foods in the city’s Mayfair section.

Police say the man was armed with a knife when he tried to rob the store but the store’s owner shot him once with a handgun. They say the man was taken to a hospital and later died.

Police Inspector Scott Small tells The Philadelphia Inquirer there were no employees or customers around at the time.

The store’s owner wasn’t physically injured. Her mother, Rita Perrello, says the man went into the store and she did what she had to do to save her own life.

Perrello says she’s glad she still has her daughter.
