PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The filing period for anyone planning to see public office in Rhode Island has opened.

Candidates have from Monday through Wednesday afternoon to file declaration of candidacy forms with state or local officials.

Those running for U.S. Congress and statewide general offices including governor, lieutenant governor and treasurer have to submit their paperwork to the secretary of state’s office. Anyone running for seats in the General Assembly or for local municipal positions should file with their board of canvassers.

Candidates will then have from July 1 through July 11 to collect signatures to qualify for the ballot.

The primary is Sept. 9. The general election is Nov. 4.
