ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - The Greater Asheville Regional Airport Authority will use a $6.5 million federal grant for the first phase of a four-year project to build a new runway and a west-side taxiway.

U.S. Rep. Mark Meadows announced the grant from the Department of Transportation on Monday. The current runway is more than 50 years old and has been resurfaced numerous times.

Airport executive director Lew Bleiweis says DOT, the Federal Aviation Administration and airport funds will cover the $64 million that the project will cost.

An official groundbreaking is scheduled Aug. 8.
