CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) - Prosecutors on Long Island say they now believe a police sergeant stole from 26 Hispanic motorists during traffic stops.

A Suffolk County grand jury indictment unsealed Tuesday charges Scott Greene with 60 counts. The charges include grand larceny as a hate crime.

He pleaded not guilty and was released without bail. His attorney declined to speak with reporters.

Prosecutors say Greene began targeting Hispanic drivers around 2010.

He was arrested earlier this year after investigators received a tip. They set up a sting and Greene allegedly was caught stealing from a Hispanic undercover officer.

Greene left the police force after his arrest.

The department says it’s been working to build trust in the Hispanic community.
