DENVER (AP) - Weld County prosecutor Ken Buck has won the Republican primary election for Colorado’s 4th Congressional District, defeating a state senator and two other Republicans.

The district includes all of eastern Colorado and parts of Denver’s southern suburbs. Republicans have a sizable voting advantage, meaning Buck has excellent prospects against Democratic candidate Vic Meyers.

Buck initially ran to be the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate, but switched to the congressional contest when the current Republican holding the seat, Rep. Cory Gardner, decided to run for Senate.

Buck defeated state Sen. Scott Renfroe and Republican activists Barbara Kirkmeyer and Steve Laffey in Tuesday’s primary.

Buck ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Senate in 2010 against Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet, who was appointed to the seat in 2009.
