JENNINGS, La. (AP) - State police say a suspect has been booked with attempted first-degree murder in the wounding of a Jennings police officer.

Sgt. James Anderson says Officer Ricky Benoit is listed in stable condition Tuesday at a Lafayette hospital.

Troopers say Benoit and a second officer responded to a disturbance call on Monday morning.

They say Benoit was inside the house with the suspect and the other officer was outside when the shooting occurred. Benoit was shot in the neck.

Anderson says 30-year-old George D Lowdins of Jennings was booked attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, resisting an officer by flight, and domestic abuse battery.

The case remains under investigation.

It was unclear whether Lowdins has an attorney.
