SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - A Spokane man who fatally stabbed another earlier this month has been sentenced to 28 years in prison, an unusually speedy resolution.

40-year-old Donald Phillips was sentenced Tuesday by Spokane County Superior Court Judge Harold Clarke.

Phillips said his guilty plea, coming less than three weeks after the fatal stabbing of Sean Oie on June 6, was made to avoid wasting the time of the court.

Defense lawyers were hindered from the start by media interviews Phillips gave while in jail in which he justified stabbing the victim.

Phillips recently finished a seven-year sentence for kidnapping and robbing a Spokane man in 2006.
