BROCKTON, Mass. (AP) - A 21-year-old Brockton man is held without bail after pleading not guilty to killing his 44-year-old father in a family dispute.

At his arraignment Tuesday in Brockton District Court, a prosecutor said Amilton Goncalves stabbed his father in the chest with a small knife Monday evening he had argued with his parents over loud music.

Joaopedro Goncalves was pronounced dead at a hospital about half an hour later.

A prosecutor said the younger man had hit his mother in the face, and the argument continued when his father returned from the hospital where she was treated.

Amilton Goncalves’ lawyer said he acted in self-defense and the murder charge against him is too harsh.

The Brockton Enterprise reports that family members wept during the court hearing Tuesday.
