BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Gov. Rick Snyder has appointed a team to examine the finances of Benton Harbor Area Schools.

The southwestern Michigan district has had a budget deficit since it ended the 2006-07 fiscal year $3 million in the red. The Benton Harbor district projects its deficit to be at $14.7 for the year ending June 30, 2014.

Snyder’s office said Monday the appointment of a financial review team is the second step in the process. The first came when the Emergency Financial Assistance Loan Board determined in April that a “probable financial stress” existed with the district.

The review team must report to Snyder within 60 days about whether a financial emergency exists.

Superintendent Leonard Seawood tells The Herald-Palladium of St. Joseph the school board acknowledges the district is under financial stress.
