MCENTIRE JOINT NATIONAL GUARD BASE, S.C. (AP) - Residents and visitors in the Myrtle Beach area may see the South Carolina Air National Guard flying an air defense exercise in the early evening.

Senior Master Sgt. Ed Snyder says Wednesday’s flights are taking place between 8:30 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Jets assigned to the Guard’s 169th Fighter Wing may be seen escorting a single-engine aircraft from the South Carolina Civil Air Patrol.

Snyder says the exercise is coordinated with the Federal Aviation Administration and there is no reason to be alarmed. The exercise maintains the Guard’s capabilities to respond to potential airborne threats over the United States.

The 169th Fighter Wing is part of the North American Defense Command’s warning network set up after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
