YORK, Pa. (AP) - A man convicted of gunning down a 9-year-old girl in a drive-by shooting in central Pennsylvania five years ago is seeking a new trial.

Twenty-four-year-old Nigel Ali Maitland was sentenced in York County to life in prison plus 25 to 50 years in the Mother’s Day 2009 shooting death of Ciara Savage.

The York Daily Record (https://bit.ly/1lRRYos ) reports that he has petitioned for a new trial arguing that his attorneys led him astray.

Maitland said Wednesday that one attorney moved for dismissal of the charges because he hadn’t been prosecuted within a year of his arrest.

But he said the lawyer later persuaded him to drop the motion and agree to a bench trial on the condition that prosecutors take the death penalty off the table.
