WALLINGTON, N.J. (AP) - A New Jersey family held funeral services Thursday for their firefighter son, who died of complications from cancer just three months after his father, also a firefighter, was killed battling a restaurant blaze.

Mourners gathered to remember 23-year-old John Barnas at a church in Wallington.

A fire dispatcher ceremonially tried to reach Barnas on the radio three times before sounding a final alarm, according to The Record (https://bit.ly/UNsvTr ).

Barnas died Saturday from pneumonia after battling Hodgkins Lymphoma for four years.

He was a volunteer firefighter in Wallington like his father, Gregory Barnas.

The elder Barnas, 57, died from injuries suffered when he fell from the roof battling the restaurant blaze. He was a 40-year volunteer with Wallington’s fire department, and a 29-year veteran of the Jersey City Fire Department.
