BETHEL, Alaska (AP) - Police in Bethel have requested an autopsy on the body of a man found on a beach near a fish camp.

KYUK-radio (https://bit.ly/TE1mkW) reports police took a call on the body just after 9 p.m. Wednesday. The body was found on an island across from the southwest Alaska city at the mouth of the Kuskokwim River.

Acting Police Chief Andre Achee says the body had been in the water a while and appears to be that of a middle-aged man.

He says the body only recently appeared and had not been seen by children swimming in the area.

Achee says there are no obvious signs of foul play. The body was transported to the State Medical Examiner’s office for identification and a determination of cause of death.
