GAFFNEY, S.C. (AP) - Cherokee County sheriff’s deputies have filed a murder charge against a Gaffney man who initially reported that his wife had been shot while he was cleaning a shotgun.

Deputies arrested 68-year-old William Dean Pennington earlier this week.

The sheriff’s office responded to Pennington’s home June 14 after he told dispatchers his shotgun had accidentally fired while he was cleaning it.

Fifty-nine-year-old Rita McGaha Pennington was found with a gunshot wound to the face and died at the scene.

Investigators have not determined a motive in the shooting.

It was not clear if William Pennington has an attorney.
