HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) - CHI St. Vincent says it will cut 157 positions system-wide after its acquisition of a hospital and clinic in Hot Springs.

The company announced Thursday that the job reductions include 91 layoffs, with the remainder of cuts occurring by leaving vacant jobs unfilled. The company acquired the 282-bed Mercy Hospital in Hot Springs in April.

CHI St. Vincent President and CEO Peter Banko says it was “a very difficult day for our ministry” but that the reductions were needed as the operations were merged. Banko says the layoffs affect 74 people in Hot Springs, 14 in Little Rock and North Little Rock and three in Morrilton.

Previously known as St. Vincent Health System, CHI St. Vincent changed its name earlier this month to reflect its sponsorship from Catholic Health Initiatives.
