DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) - The Davenport City Council has approved spending $20,000 to seek a federal grant of $600,000 for Quad-Cities Food Hub projects, including the Veggie Mobile.

The Quad-City Times says (https://bit.ly/1jUcOPX ) the proposal will be finished by mid-July, and the federal grant awards will be announced in September.

The future Food Hub projects include expanding Veggie Mobile deliveries to year-round status instead of just seasonal. Another project would be a commercial incubator kitchen, which would provide development support for new local businesses.

The Veggie Mobile takes fresh produce from local providers to area consumers, especially those in neighborhoods defined as “food deserts.” Food deserts are areas where residents lack easy access to fresh fruits and vegetables, often because they don’t live near a supermarket.
