LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) - A second trip before a grand jury has resulted in a higher charge for a man accused of shooting a pastor during a revival service.

Woodrow Karey was indicted with second-degree murder Thursday, elevated from manslaughter that another grand jury indicted him on in November. The American Press reports (https://bit.ly/1pIjRz9 ) the first panel could have indicted Karey on the higher charge but opted for manslaughter.

Calcasieu Parish District Attorney’s spokeswoman Holly Carter says the case was returned to a grand jury because of new evidence. She didn’t say what the new evidence was.

Karey shot and killed pastor Ronald J. Harris Sr. on Sept. 27 inside his church. Karey then called 911 and surrendered, telling police that Harris had raped his wife.

Karey is being held on $500,000 bond.
