GAYLORD, Mich. (AP) - The chancellor of the Catholic Diocese of Lansing has been named the fifth bishop of the Gaylord diocese.

Pope Francis announced the appointment of Monsignor Steven J. Raica on Friday.

The Petoskey News-Review and the Lansing State Journal report Raica will be installed at St. Mary Cathedral in Gaylord on Aug. 28.

The 61-year-old Raica grew up in Munising. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and secondary education from Michigan State University and a master’s degree from St. John Provincial Seminary in Plymouth.

Raica was ordained a priest in 1978 and named a monsignor 20 years later. He also has served at parishes in Charlotte, Flint and Ovid.

The Traverse City Record-Eagle says the Gaylord diocese has been without a bishop since last year.
