ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) - An Aberdeen man has been sent to prison for six years for a shooting that wounded a woman.

Thirty-year-old Diego Ortiz Mendez was accused of firing a shot that hit Whitney Schaunaman in the neck in the early morning hours of Jan. 25. She was treated at a hospital and released the same day.

Authorities say the shooting happened after a dispute involving two groups of people at a bar. Mendez said he fired a warning shot to attract police and never intended to hurt anyone.

The American News reports (https://bit.ly/UPu1nP ) that Mendez earlier pleaded guilty to felony aggravated assault. He was sentenced Thursday to 10 years in prison with four years suspended and ordered to pay nearly $15,000 in restitution to cover Shaunaman’s medical bills.
