PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Police responding to a reported shooting at a southeast Portland apartment say they have found a woman and a man dead in an apparent murder-suicide.

Sgt. Pete Simpson says officers reached the Amber Court Apartments at about 5:30 p.m. Friday and entered one unit after being told that there might be an injured woman inside. As officers started to search the apartment, they heard a gunshot in the residence. Unable to determine exactly where the shot came from, Simpson says officers backed out and called for negotiators and an emergency response team.

Crisis negotiators tried unsuccessfully to make contact with anyone inside the apartment.

Police then fired several tear gas rounds into the apartment and went in to try and rescue the person they believed to be injured.

Simpson says that’s when officers found the two bodies.

The spokesman says police did not fire their guns. No one else was injured.

Homicide detectives are investigating.
