SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A progressive group has filed a federal election complaint against Republican U.S. Sen. Mike Lee of Utah.

The Alliance for a Better Utah filed the complaint Wednesday after an indicted businessman told investigators he funneled $50,000 of his money to others who then donated to Lee’s 2010 campaign.

Lee told The Salt Lake Tribune (https://bit.ly/UNF7Kg) Thursday that he and his campaign were not aware of the businessman using straw donors.

The complaint also says Lee had an unreported campaign contribution when he sold his home two years ago to a friend and then rented a nearby home from the same man.

Lee says the transactions were separate and he paid fair-market rates for the rent.

If the FEC determines the complaint is worth investigating, it will allow Lee to formally respond.
