CORUNNA, Mich. (AP) - A woman has been sentenced to serve 2 to 15 years in prison in the fatal shooting of her husband during a 2012 fight in their Shiawassee County home.

Melinda Watkins pleaded no contest to manslaughter last month.

Shiawassee County Circuit Judge Gerald Lostracco sentenced Watkins Friday. The Lansing State Journal says (https://on.lsj.com/Tq9gxQ ) the 45-year-old will be eligible for parole after serving 2 years and 8 months.

Dean Watkins was shot during an argument in Sciota Township, northeast of Lansing.

Melinda Watkins has said she and her 42-year-old husband began arguing after she announced her intention to leave him.

In a written statement submitted before her sentencing, Watkins said she was putting the gun down, “and it went off.”

Prosecutor Deanna Finnegan says the shooting could not have been accidental.
