AURORA, Ill. (AP) - Aurora police say nine alleged gang members have been arrested on weapons and narcotics charges.

Authorities say the charges are the result of a two-year investigation conducted with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. They said three more men face charges - two of whom are at large and a third who’s in custody elsewhere.

The investigation began in August 2012 and resulted in the seizure of two firearms, cocaine and heroin. Authorities say all of the men were targeted because of extensive criminal histories, including attempted murder.

Police say the new charges involved the alleged sale of weapons or narcotics on 17 different occasions to undercover officers.

Aurora Police Chief Greg Thomas says similar investigations will continue in an effort to make the city safe.
