NORTHFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Firefighters have rescued a teenager who climbed to the top of a 110-foot cell phone tower north of Chicago.

The 18-year-old scaled the tower Friday night in Northfield. The tower is located just behind the fire station, and residents hearing the teen alerted firefighters.

Assistant Northfield Fire Chief Tom Burke says firefighters lowered the man using a rope and harness and then put him into the basket of an extension ladder to take him the rest of the way to the ground.

The teen was not hurt but was hospitalized in Highland Park as a precaution.

It was not immediately clear what prompted him to climb the tower.
