OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - A man convicted of hiring someone to kill his pregnant estranged wife was sentenced to death this week in Oklahoma City.

A jury handed down the death penalty to 26-year-old Fabion DeMargio Brown on Friday, according to a story published Saturday in the Oklahoman (https://bit.ly/TGhNNu ). Fabion Brown had been convicted a day earlier of killing Jessica Brown, 23, and her fetus in her Midwest City home on Jan. 11, 2012.

Prosecutors acknowledged that Fabion Brown did not pull the trigger, but instead paid someone $250 to do it.

Judy Richardson, Jessica Brown’s mother, said after the sentence was announced that she hopes no other family will have to go through the same thing. The couple’s two children are in Richardson’s custody.

“All they know is that dad is in time-out,” she said.

Fabion Brown represented himself. On Friday, he asked for a continuance of the penalty phase of the case and to be represented by attorneys, but his request was denied. He remained silent as he was led from the courtroom to jail after the verdict was announced.

Fabion Brown’s mother testified on his behalf, saying that his stepfather was an alcoholic Vietnam veteran who regularly physically, mentally and emotionally abused her two sons.

Fabion Brown also told jurors of his Army National Guard and Army Reserve service as he tried to convince them to spare his life. He joined the military at 17 and volunteered for deployment. He was stationed in Iraq for less than a year, he said.

“I stand before you and ask for a sentence less than death,” he said to the jury.

Three other co-defendants made plea agreements and have already been sentenced.

Brodic Lontae Glover, 22, pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder and accessory to murder. Glover, the gunman, was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. Laquan Ashley, 19, was the driver of the getaway car and pleaded guilty to being an accessory to first-degree murder and was sentenced to eight years in prison.

Fabion Brown’s girlfriend, Emily Ann Matheson, 25, pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder and was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Ashley and Matheson both testified against Fabion Brown at trial.
