LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) - A suburban Atlanta couple accused of locking their son in the basement of their home for more than a year has been denied bond.

WSB-TV reports the couple appeared in court on Saturday after turning themselves in Friday evening (https://bit.ly/1rKbOTE). Gwinnett County police say the Buford couple is accused of confining their son to a small room with a mattress and a makeshift toilet.

They are charged with false imprisonment and child cruelty.

Police investigated after the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services received an anonymous tip June 15. The boy’s parents told authorities he was locked up for disciplinary reasons.

Police say the teen had no physical injuries or problems. The Georgia Division of Family and Children Services took custody of the boy and his siblings.
