FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) - A pilot escaped injury when a small plane crashed during takeoff in the Cantwell area.

An Alaska State Troopers news release says 70-year-old David “Butch” Gratias was the only person aboard the Piper Super-Cub when it crashed Wednesday at the Susitna Glacier landing strip.

A Fairbanks-based trooper helicopter wasn’t available because of the weather. The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports (https://is.gd/RWnv54 ) the 11th Air Force Rescue Coordination Center responded with a military helicopter.
