Police say the victim is Christopher James. He was a resident of Rochester.

The Rochester man with a group that was jumping off an old bridge Thursday afternoon in the town of Gates, just west of Rochester.

Officials say James jumped into the water but never resurfaced.

Emergency crews were called to the scene, where James’ body was found 40 minutes later at the bottom of the canal in 10 feet of water.

Officials say it’s dangerous to swim in the canal because of debris in the water and high walls along the waterway.
