GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - The aftermath of the bitterly cold winter is being seen by boaters in Michigan, with some orders stacking up for seasonal dock and lift installations.

Some plans to put boats in the water at marinas also have been delayed, The Grand Rapids Press reported (https://bit.ly/1o3kuEh ).

Kevin Zoodsma, pro shop manager at Action Water Sports in Hudsonville, said more people waited longer to start getting ready for the boating season. Zoodsma said some pushed back plans until after Memorial Day weekend, which typically marks the start of boating season.

“Typically, during the end of March, everybody is ready for spring and starting to think about getting the boats out and docks and lifts installed,” Zoodsma said. “It was colder this year; everybody was holding off. There’s only so much you can do with so many people … at the same time.”

Despite the delay, Zoodsma said Action Water Sports is “right on target” with about 150 lifts and docks put in so far this year. A slow April was countered by a busy May. Other professional installers and dock owners braved the chilly waters in wetsuits earlier in the season.

“They just want to get into the cold water, but there’s only so much you can take,” Zoodsma said.

At River Haven Marina in Grand Haven, owner Dave Lenger says snow and ice melted later than usual. Close to 10 docks at River Haven Marina were damaged by ice this year, up from three or fewer in previous years, and repairs have pushed back other work.

“The snow melt was so late and ice melt was so late, so everything is two weeks behind and people’s schedules are running weeks behind,” owner Dave Lenger said.
