NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island National Guard unit is headed to Kuwait.

A send-off ceremony will be held Wednesday at the Quonset Air National Guard Base for the F Co, 1-126th Medical Evacuation flight company, based in North Kingstown.

The unit will train at Fort Hood in Texas before going overseas for the yearlong deployment.

About 70 soldiers from the 100-person unit are deploying. Most of the soldiers in the unit are from Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts. They will be responsible for medical evacuations in the region.

The same unit deployed to Afghanistan in 2011. Fewer than 50 of the state’s guard members are currently deployed overseas.
