SOUTH MANITOU ISLAND, Mich. (AP) - The U.S. Coast Guard has rescued two kayakers from Lake Michigan near South Manitou Island.

The Coast Guard says a Traverse City-based rescue helicopter was called about 6 p.m. Sunday to assist in the search for two kayakers thought to be between South Manitou Island and Sleeping Bear Dunes along Michigan’s northwestern Lower Peninsula.

Previously, passengers on a boat rescued three kayakers near Manitou Island after the kayakers were too fatigued to complete their journey. The kayakers reported two additional members from their group missing. The crew on the helicopter found them about 6:30 p.m.

One person was hanging onto a capsized kayak while the other was still in a kayak. Both kayakers were hoisted into the helicopter.

The kayaker who was in the water had symptoms of hypothermia.
