SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (AP) - A Detroit City Council member has spent a night in a suburban jail after police suspected him of drunken driving.

The Detroit Free Press (https://on.freep.com/1iOvBS9 ) says Councilman Scott Benson’s lawyer confirms the arrest Sunday in Southfield. Philip Ragan says his client is “very apologetic.”

Southfield police Deputy Chief Nick Loussia says any further legal action will depend on the results of a blood test. He declines to confirm Benson’s identity, but TV crews witnessed the councilman’s release from jail Monday.

Detroit city attorney Melvin “Butch” Hollowell says the city will recover the vehicle and keep the keys until the matter is resolved.
