GILBERT, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities are hoping experts can identify a badly decomposed body found in an apparently abandoned house in Gilbert.

Gilbert police say it’s possible the person had been dead for months before a locksmith found the body Saturday while changing a lock in the home.

The locksmith told police there was a pet bird in the home’s living room in a cage with water and food.

Detectives are looking for the person who last lived in the house.

They aren’t sure if there was a crime committed, beyond possibly a misdemeanor count of failure to report a death.

Police say the body now is at the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office.

They say the body was in such an advanced stage of decomposition that even the person’s gender couldn’t be determined.
