INSTITUTE, W.Va. (AP) - A Charleston woman whose son was fatally shot is a featured speaker at a drug summit this week.

The Teen Summit Against Drugs will be held Wednesday in the Wilson University Union at West Virginia State University.

Deanna McKinney will be the featured speaker at a noon luncheon. Her son, 19-year-old Tymel, was fatally shot earlier this year while sitting on his front porch in Charleston.

Other events include workshops by community leaders, games and informational sessions for both teenagers and parents.

The summit is sponsored by West Virginia State’s Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math-Science programs in conjunction with the Partnership of African-American Churches.

Upward Bound director Barbara Cary says the summit is designed to increase awareness about the dangers of drug use and to offer teenagers alternatives.
