SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Authorities say a Utah car thief stole a minivan and returned it moments later when she spotted a three-year-old in the back seat.

Salt Lake City police Lt. Scott White tells KSL-TV (https://bit.ly/1mOoLvn ) the 22-year-old Idaly Proano climbed behind the wheel of a Dodge Caravan that was running and unlocked Sunday.

Police say the girl’s mother left the van to make sure the front door of her home was locked. She heard the car door close and ran to a neighbor’s house to call 911.

White says the suspect drove back within moments, then knocked on the door and safely returned the girl.

She is in Salt Lake County Jail and faces felony charges of theft and possessing methamphetamine.

Police say it’s unlikely she will be charged with attempted kidnapping.
