LOS ANGELES (AP) - The California Highway Patrol says three teenage girls are hospitalized Wednesday after a car crashed into them at a North Hollywood crosswalk.

CHP Officer Leland Tang says the three 14-year-old girls were struck while walking back to school from a physical education class at a nearby park. Tang says the Prius failed to stop at a light on the U.S. 170 freeway off-ramp, hitting the girls before colliding with another vehicle.

The Prius’ driver told investigators that he could not stop the car because its brakes failed. Tang said forensic analysis of the vehicle will confirm the driver’s account.

One of the teenage girls is on life support at an area trauma center and the other two girls are in serious condition. The 48-year-old Prius driver was also hospitalized.
