GAUTIER, Miss. (AP) - The city of Gautier has a new smoke-free ordinance - with several exemptions.

The Mississippi Press reports (https://bit.ly/1oVLIyH ) the city council voted 4-3 Tuesday to approve the ordinance. Mayor Gordon Gollott broke what would have been a tie.

The modified ordinance, crafted by Grants Coordinator Patty Huffman and City Manager Samantha Abell, exempts private clubs. It also allows outside restaurant areas to have some outside smoking, does not prohibit e-cigarettes and does not require hotel and motel rooms be smoke-free.

The ordinance specifies where smoking is prohibited in indoor public places and in many other designated public and work places.

“I think this is a very smart move for this city,” Gollott said. “I favor it because it is the right thing to do.”

Councilmen Casey Vaughan said he did not want to put an added burden on businesses to make accommodations to allow for non-smoking.

“Business owners should have a right to run their own businesses,” he said.
