SYDNEY (AP) - Midfielder Massimo Luongo figured his chances of making Australia’s team for the World Cup were so remote he planned a holiday to Turkey during the tournament.

Those plans changed when Luongo, who plays for Swindon Town in England’s third-tier League One, was told by coach Ange Postecoglou that he’d made the final 23-man squad for Australia’s matches against Chile, the Netherlands and defending champions Spain in Group B.

Australian media reported Thursday from the team’s training camp in Vitoria, Brazil that Luongo’s girlfriend and her family will still make the trip to Turkey, but “obviously I can’t make it out there so I told them sorry.”

The 21-year-old Luongo made his international debut for Australia in March as a second-half substitute in a 4-3 loss to Ecuador in London.
